Promotes development of environmentally-friendly IT & Network Solutions -

Tokyo, June 30, 2005 --- NEC Corporation today announced that it has succeeded in the development of a software tool capable of evaluating the impact of the introduction of IT/Network Solutions on the environment by estimating the amount of carbon dioxide ("CO2") emissions that can be reduced by their introduction. It is expected that this tool will greatly contribute to the prevention of increased CO2 emissions and also to their reduction by switching to more environmentally sound solutions products.

The features of this newly-developed tool include the following:
1) Boasting a template function, this tool enables designers and sales people with limited expert knowledge of the environment to easily construct environmental load evaluation models, which describe the quantity of CO2 emissions before and after the introduction of specific solutions, by simply inputting data.
2) It contains an eco-design support function, which easily allows the comparison of CO2 reduction effects enabled by a variety of solutions products, realizing advanced solutions design with enhanced CO2 reduction effects.
3) In addition, it possesses a database containing more than 50 NEC-evaluated case study results.

In April 2005, NEC decided to introduce this tool within NEC Group in order to support the "Eco Symbol" certification program for software and services (note 1). The introduction of this tool enabled NEC Group to reorganize its design system toward the creation of improved environmentally sound solutions. Design and development divisions within the NEC Group are now capable of developing advanced solutions with enhanced CO2 reduction effects.

NEC will continue to develop and promote environmentally-friendly IT/Network Solutions under the concept of "Ecology through IT" in order to achieve "NEC Environmental Management Vision 2010", NEC's long-term vision that aims to reduce the CO2 emissions of its customers and society through the provision of IT/Network Solutions, and also to eliminate its own direct and indirect CO2 emissions by the year 2011.

Notes
(1) The "Eco Symbol" certification program for solutions, such as software and services "Eco Symbol" is a type II eco-label that NEC gives its products and solutions, such as its software and services, when they meet all of the following four environmentally sound criteria:

(I) Environmental assessment is carried out during solution development.
(II) The solution satisfies all 25 environmental standards, such as power-saving design.
(III) The solution includes unique IT/network technologies, and environmental load reduction is expected by its introduction; or more than 50% of the impact on the environment is expected to be reduced; or it is expected to achieve 1500t/year of environmental load reduction.
(IV) Disclosure of environmental information about the solution.

* Type II eco-label is an eco-label that is given by the manufacturer itself based on original criteria as defined by it.
